Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or spastic colon is a symptom-based diagnosis. Chronic symptoms such as abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating and, or, alteration of bowel habits with either diarrhea or constipation are consistent with this diagnosis. Symptoms of IBS are more likely to occur after an infection or a stressful life event. The most common theory is that IBS is a disorder of the interaction between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract based on its microbiota.
